What can we do to improve the content on federal websites to make it more readable, engaging, and useful?
Some pages need to be written in plain English while other pages may be intended for a technical audience (say, scientists in a field). Pages could be classified as "kids" "adults" "advanced users" "technical" depending on what they need to do. Different policies can be followed on different type pages
I would like to see a hierarchical structure set up so that a "drill down" approach could be used. At the top is the "government" node, then next is the 3 branches. Under the legislative branch would be two nodes for the house and senate. Under each chamber would be a listing of the bills that are in process, and a list of recent passed bills. Having just one web site where the user could go to - to find out anything related to what the Fed Gov't is saying - it might be health, customs, defense, transportation
there needs to be a site where the public can vote on bills and actions of congress and senate and polls this would eliminate the polls from the media and the results would be known by all and what questions were ask to obtain the results. this also would eliminate any discrepancies between parties as to the popularity of their bills,ideas,agendas,ETC.
It is often difficult to understand what is being conveyed by all of the charts on the http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ website. Can the average citizen info be put first? In a company, the web staff are focused and rewarded on building increasing web traffic, increasing email and social media subscribers, and increasing conversions (actions they want to take). Government web leaders aren't necessarily rewarded on these goals but on other items (whether senior leaders like it, does it look pretty, etc). Hire experienced game designers to create consumer/citizen education content, particularly when it is directed at children. NIH and some other agencies have done well in making some of their content engaging, but others are on the level of power point slides.
Use reading and navigation tools from the best, most engaging of social media sites that millions of people are using ( and enjoying everyday).
I got home a little late to catch the beginning of the American Jobs Act. Right after the speech, I went to the WH site to see the speech and it either wasn't there or I couldn't find it.
"The document" is still very important in government, well, documentation of its activities, finding, decisions, orders, etc. Paper documents are a thing of the past, so most people need to search for an agency decision, bulletin, scientific report, or ruling online. Our small business has recently become a required user of WAWF. I have found this system for vendor invoicing to be a NIGHTMARE! Another individual on this site has pointed out a series of problems with the site based on browsers supported, ActiveX requirement, etc. I agree with all of these comments, although I note that some or most have already been corrected. I have been doing our office's web site for over 16 years. I'm trying to get input for content on our new framework pages but get minimal input. This content should be determined by the upper echelon in our office, but no one seems to care to even make comments and when they do, it is more of "why don't we do something like our office in State X is doing?" rather than providing specific verbiage for our location. In studying the usability of websites by under-educated individuals we have found that the site has to make it easy for a user to make repairs - correct themselves when they wind up somewhere they didn't want to be.
Repair skills of a user have to be matched with linguistic tools, visual and navigation aids that help in this process.
